The Mechanics of the Shear Line

Standard residential locks operate on a highly precise pin-tumbler system. Inside the cylinder plug are stacks of top and bottom brass pins of varying lengths. The correct key elevates these pins to form a perfectly flush line—the shear line—allowing the lock to turn smoothly. When you hire an expert rekey locksmith from our team, we extract the cylinder plug, dump out the old bottom pins, and insert a completely new mathematical sequence of pins. We then cut a brand new key to match this new sequence. Any previous keys will hit a physical wall inside the lock and will completely fail to turn.

Streamlining with Master Key Systems

Are you tired of carrying a heavy, confusing keyring with a different key for the front door, back door, and side gate? When you hire us for residential locksmith services near me, we can streamline your daily access. Assuming all of your locks share the same brand's keyway profile (e.g., they are all Kwikset or all Schlage), we can rekey door locks across your entire property to operate seamlessly on one single key!

Upgrading Security During a Rekey

A rekey is the absolute ideal time to enhance your physical defense without buying expensive new locks. Standard hardware store locks are highly susceptible to "lock bumping"—a common burglary technique that uses kinetic force to make the pins jump the shear line. While we have your cylinder disassembled on our workbench for rekeying, we can replace standard driver pins with high-security "spool" or "serrated" pins. These specialized pins bind up and catch at the shear line during a bumping or picking attack, drastically thwarting unauthorized entry.

Frequently Asked Questions

• Why is it better to rekey rather than replace a lock? Cost and convenience. Rekeying only costs the labor and the tiny brass pins, rather than purchasing the heavy metal casing and latches of a brand new lockset. It also allows you to keep the hardware that currently matches your home’s beautiful aesthetic perfectly.
• How long does it take to rekey a door? A skilled residential locksmith can typically remove, disassemble, re-pin, and reinstall a standard residential deadbolt in about 15 to 20 minutes per lock.
• What if I don't have the original key to the lock? Normally, we use the original key to smoothly turn the plug and remove it from the housing. If the key is permanently lost, we simply pick the lock open or shim the cylinder to access the pins. It is a completely routine process that takes only a few minutes longer.
• How many new keys will I receive? Our service includes a standard set of newly cut keys. Because we operate mobile workshops with high-precision key cutting machines directly on board, we can originate as many exact duplicate copies as your family needs before we even leave your property.
